AI Pushes 2026 Tech Layoffs Past 50K in Just Three Months
The first three months of 2026 saw 52,050 tech layoffs—a 40% jump from the same period last year. Artificial intelligence has become the leading reason employers cite for job cuts, accounting for 15,341 of the firings (25% of total tech layoffs in March). Major companies including Oracle, Meta, Amazon, and Dell have announced massive workforce reductions, with executives explicitly citing AI investments as the reason for eliminating roles. Meta alone planned layoffs of 20% of its workforce (approximately 15,000 employees), while Amazon eliminated 16,000 corporate positions. The trend reflects a broader shift where companies are redirecting budgets away from traditional roles toward AI infrastructure and development.
